It's a rock band.
Hawthorne Heights is for Lovers: "The five guys who make up the Ohio-spawned rock outfit don’t exactly look like the kind of guys who could change the face of mainstream rock music, connecting the dots between the burgeoning underground screamo scene and the multitudes of suburban teens looking for a bit more chemical and a little less romance. But they did. They don’t really seem like the type of dudes whose debut record, the off-handedly produced and initially panned The Silence in Black and White would go on to be certified gold and produce the rock song of 2005, the menacingly addictive anthem “Ohio is for Lovers.” But it did. And you would definitely be hard-pressed to believe that the band’s sophomore effort, If Only You Were Lonely, released February 28th on Victory Records is making industry number-crunchers salivate and will assuredly take the band to an entirely new level of mainstream acceptance. But it’s all true."

Why do Hawthorn win games at the wrong end of the season which mean stuff all anyway?
well i think you still have about 10 premiership cups under ya belts (wikipedia), and even though your member numbers have decreased since 2002, you're not as broke as the kanga's and have 4 more wins than bombers and blues this season...
If it makes you feel better, watch the kangaroo's coach Dean Laidly give his loss speech then watch your coach...
Alistair Clarkson(?) looks disappointed - yes- but quietly confident in the future years to come...Laidly looks full suicidal and seems to have no hope in the team.
so if clarkson is confident you should be too.
If you're really into your game you'll know its like a religion (no disrespect to christians)....its all about faith and hope.
Reply:Its not fair! i am a long time fan aswell, and havnt had the joy of a premiership, EVER!! and every game we play really well at the start too, but then we seem to run out of steam. But Alistair Clarkson is a good coach- and 2007 and 2008 are gonna be the return of the mighty hawks.....mwahaha Report It

He donated money to the Connolly Society which uses the money to support the families of gaoled Republican terrorists in Northern Ireland.

Everyone is saying Hawthorn can beat Geelong, then which team can beat Hawthorn?
Which team can beat Hawthorn in 2008?
obviously the cats, maybe the doggies, kanga's next time, tiges got close and will be better next time round 20, hopefully, crows next time?, who kows, footies a funny game, things can change quickly with a few injuries here and there.
Reply:On current form I think the Doggies are in with a chance after seeing them play the Swanees at the weekend. It depends what happens as the season wears on (injuries etc.) but the teams I would give a rough chance to beat the Hawks would be Geelong of course and just maybe Adelaide, Port Adelaide but on current form I am thinking it will be Hawks v. Cats in the Grand Final but that's on current form. My leaning is that the Hawks will win the Grand Final and be a more worthy opponent that Port Adelaide last year - but we must keep an eye on both South Australian teams and a lot of improvement left in both of them. Hey the Swanees might fluke it too????????
Reply:It think it might be someone who everybody least expects. I am hoping that Essendon will have their injured players back and that Lucas will stick it to them but i think I am being too far fetched with that idea!
Have the Demons played them yet? They took it up to Geelong and certainly did well against Freo. I think that it doesn't always boil down to where you are on the ladder but how well certain players play on their opponants and I think this is why some teams who don't win much can play exceptionally well against tougher teams.

Is hawthorn extract an effective sleep aid?
I thought it was supposed to strengthen blood vessels.....
Valerian is supposed to be good for getting to sleep
.....also exercise early in the day
Is hawthorn extract an effective sleep aid?
No, it is not.
Hawthorn :
Relieves chest pain of angina.
Lowers high blood pressure.
Helps the heart pump more efficiently in people with congestive heart failure.
Corrects irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmia).
Reply:You need something with melatonin. I here cherry concentrate drinks have a high level of melatonin. You should try it. It helps me.
Reply:Valerian is good for insomnia.
Reply:Here are the herbs usually used for insomnia: valerian, melatonin, relora. I would buy only good brands at stores like GNC or online at http://www.vitabase.com/default.aspx.
Reply:No. It is used to treat High Blood Pressure and some Heart problems.
Reply:Add to Zambiti's list 1) Hops tincture; 2) Passion flower; 3) Linden (Tilia) tea, tincture and infusions; 4) Oatstraw; 5) Calms and Calms Forte Tablets; 6) Alfalfa tablets, tincture and tea and Alfalco Liquid Extract; 7) The daily consumption of Oats and Oatstraw Tea; 8) Chamomile tea and tincture. And ditto the commentary about Hawthorne being used as a high blood pressure and heart tonic. I am not at all familiar with its use as a sleep aid.
Reply:Yeah pretty much what everyone else said. It definately should not be used as a sleep aid. I would try sleep aids that have chamomile, valerian, hops and 5HTP in them. That combination is usually awesome. You may want to look for a good sleep aid as I take this and it does wonders. http://www.snoozeease.com
Reply:I've never heard hawthorn being used for insomnia. The power hitters for insomnia are melatonin, chamomile tea and Epsom salt baths (20 minute limit).
Reply:Hawthorn is a blood thinner that helps to reduce high blood pressure. It has been used as a heart tonic for ages.
As far as I know it is of no effect for insomnia.
Reply:no it,s for the heart love ,take some stilnox ,xanax. oxydone and there you go to nigh nigh,s ask anyone well most dont wake up so it,s your call.ps well heath ledger had a sleeping problem didnt he ?

Is Hawthorn Football Club the best club ever?
I was just wondering as i am a long time Hawthorn fan!!!!
Go Sam Mitchell!!:D
Is Hawthorn Football Club the best club ever?
Half you fools can't even spell. How can we expect to take your opinions seriously. Gosh, learn some grammar guys!
Hawthorn is not the best ever. But we might just see what they really are come season's end. Essendon and Carlton (although they pretty much suck now) have the most premiership flags so based on that, they would be the best.
After all, a club's main objective is to win a premiership. Therefore wouldn't the club/s with the most be considered the best?
Reply:your just wondering are you?
No, they are not the best side ever, if they win 3 or 4 flags in a row, get back to me.
At this point in time the present side has done nothing, grand final wins are what the clubs play for and are judged by, as i said, at present Hawthorne have done nothing yet!
Reply:For you Tessa unfortunately no, they are a very good and proud club, no doubt about it but if you have to got to records Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood would be the top 3 overall. But the Hawks aren't far off though with the tigers, Dees and maybe Fitsroy/Brisbane.
P.S can you please answer my question on Robert Walls. Thank you Tes.

Reply:Im a rabid Hawk fan but I have to say no...going back over the years clubs like Collingwood and Melbourne stand out as do Carlton and Richmond. But since 1980 they would have to rate as one of the best of the modern era, along with Brisbane and West Coast.

Ornamental Hawthorn problem?
I have a pink flowering Hawthorn planted in my lawn around 10 years ago. Looking quite poorly this year - no flowers and poor foliage. Live in N Ireland - had mild winter, dry april and may and rain ever since !
Any ideas what the problem could be and possible solutions? I cant dig any compost in round the roots as its planted in the middle of my lawn !
Ornamental Hawthorn problem?
get rid of the grass near the tree and form a mulch ring

They haven't released (or figured out for that matter) what the cause of death was. He died overnight. The speculation is that it might be asthma related.

The flies that show a preference for either Hawthorn or Apples, and are no longer interbreeding populations because of this, illustrate what type of speciation?
allopatric
specialization
polyploidy
founder effect
sympatric
The flies that show a preference for either Hawthorn or Apples, and are no longer interbreeding populations be
Sympatric is correct.
Allopatric = the speciation occurs in a different place (allo = different); this would happen if one portion of the original fly population had migrated and adapted to the different conditions of its new habitat
Specialization = not something I've heard of. This seems to be something to throw you off.
Polyploidy = the condition of having multiple sets of chromosomes. We're diploid. Plants can evolve into different species through polyploidy, but animals can not. That's because some plants are self-fertilizing.
Founder effect = the resulting smaller gene pool that's a result of just a few individuals moving to another place. This could happen if a pregnant female migrates. Such a small gene pool could lead to speciation.
Sympatric speciation occurs in the same place (sym = together). Since the flies live in the same place, but they are differentiated only by their food preference, speciation has occurred without migration.
Reply:Sympatric - the flies become dependent on different plants in the same area.

I only know the symbolism in this novel, kindly let me know some artistic device that you know in this novel

Personally I feel that the wearing of the "letter" in itself is a device used by the author to create mood, feeling, tension and a sense of irony.

oh thats right, the captain/vice-captain are giving everyone corkys - they cant win games on their own merit, they gotta disable their opponents.

I wish you luck this weekend!
Reply:lol @ Rogue and your next on the hit list. All teams have their share of mongrels Rogue including Collingwood, one of thems returning this week i believe ... or is it two of them ?
The hawks got there act together last season Rogue and this season have just continued on with it.
We now have a pretty good forward line and even though Franklin didn't fire last week kicking 1.7 Roughnut kicked 5 and Rioli was as usual always dangerous.
Throw in the likes of Williams, who was out last season with an injury and Tim Boyle to return as well as Dew getting back from Injury it's not a bad forward line at all, and most teams will struggle to match the tall forwards as well as the crumbers. And if like last week one doesn't fire another one will.
The young guys that have now been in the system the last 2 - 3 years who rotate through the mid field are now playing a good style of football which allows Hodge to rotate from the midfield and backline and takes the added pressure off guys like Mitchell and Sewell
Reply:If thats what they are doing then it's a bit unfair! Maybe they also get an advantage by playing in Tasmania; we know how upset Mark Thompson was at having to play the Hawks in Launceston last season and how crabby he was when the Hawks beat the Cats there! What they did to the Lions a couple of weeks back was awesome. Croad managed to keep our leviathon Mr Brown virtually shut down for the whole game, that does NOT happen often. The rest of the team played a fantastic game * cough.... gag ....YAK* cannot believe i just said that.

Anyone have a washington hawthorn tree?
im considering planting one in our front yard to provide some shade in the summer.....in sacramento the summers are brutal, and shade is an energy saver.
wondering if the tree is messy, what shape it has, susceptible to any diseases or bugs.....general stuff..
thanks
Anyone have a washington hawthorn tree?
Crataegus phaenopyrum Washington Hawthorn grows 25' by 20'. broadly oval to rounded, dense thorny tree. foliage is a reddish purple when unfolding gradually changing to lustrous dark green at maturity; fall color varies from orange to scarlet through purplish; flowers are white,1/2",not badly scented compared to C.mollis...blooms 7 to 10 days in early June. fruit is a bright glossy red,1/4". Excellent single specimen plant, screen, near buildings, streets, borders, hedges.on the U. of Georgia campus this species has been outstanding for fruit display. southeast native. zone 4 to 8. not too messy. hawthorns, though lovely ornamentals, are severely affected by pests, rust, miners, etc. %26lt;dirr,m.%26gt;gt however, with proper care it would be a good shade tree. the one on campus has been fine for 16 years

Problem with hawthorn?
I have a 10 year old pink flowering hawthorn tree. last year it was quite poorly - hardly any flowers or leaves. I have it planted in my lawn and followed advice of gardener to put a mulch ring around it and feed with tomato food. I guess it was too late in the season then to see any real improvement. But this year, it seems no better - very sparse leaves and buds. My grandmother planted this tree the year before she died and I desperately want to save it. Can you help me please?
Problem with hawthorn?
I wish I knew this one!
Reply:Is it getting enough sunlight? Are you over watering it? Has the trunk been damaged somehow? A bone fide nursery (not a big box garden center) might be able to give you some insight as to what is going on. I would also call your county's extension office and ask to speak to the County Master Gardener.
My one experience with a flowering hawthorne was similar to yours ~ ours only lasted about 5 years, and the city forestry department said that hawthornes can be rather fickle for no explicable reason.
Reply:Hawthorns are generally very hardy. In 10 years it should be very vigorous.
As you have fed it, my advice would be to prune it hard. Oh yes, I know it takes courage, but it will pay on the end. By mid summer it will throw up healthy new shoots. And next year it will flower as normal.
Good luck.
Reply:Hawthorns are particularly prune to honey fungus disease.Anything else not doing well,or is there an old tree stump near by
Reply:I am just wondering about the level of the mulch ring you added. You should never go higher than the natural collar of the tree with soil/compost. Check and see where it wants the soil level to be. Easy to do just pull the mulch away and look at the base of the trunk. Where the roots flare out is where it should be. The other problem with trees can be how they were planted on the first place. They do not like their roots spiralling round and in a pot this is often the case. When planting these need to be straightened out or upto 10 years later the tree can die from girdling.

The other possible cause is this....[They are, however, susceptible to fireblight, a disease that affects many of the trees and shrubs in the family Rosaceae. There is no effective treatment for this disease and, should you be unfortunate enough for any of your plants to contract it, then the only thing to do is to grub up and burn the infected plant in order to prevent the disease from spreading. The disease is not very common, fortunately, but many growers do recommend that you keep your cultivated apples away from Crataegus and other members of the family such as Cotoneasters and Pyracanthas as a precaution]
The symptoms are described here;
http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles070...
I do hope it is none of the reasons I have described as this tree sounds very special to you.

Very mature, tall overgrown hawthorn hedge?
with quite thick stems. Is laying or coppicing the best form of management? This does not need to be stockproof.
Very mature, tall overgrown hawthorn hedge?
coppicing is no good, you'll have no hedge !
laying is best, it promotes growth and habitate. Use hawthorn stakes rather than inch squares that some layers use, and make sure the heathering is bound in the correct way for your region.
Lay it according to local practice. Different styles are used depending on where you are.
this is a great website for you:
http://www.hedgelayer.freeserve.co.uk/in...
It taught me enough to be able to get quite competent at the job and is also good to learn the terms and whats involved incase you need to discuss it with a craftsman.
Even if you are not laying a hedge, it makes an interesting and accessible read anyway.
There, thats worth 10 points eh ?
Reply:You can cut hawthorn back quite hard without killing the trees, so coppicing sounds the best bet. Best of luck though, you'll need stout gloves and thornproof clothing.

Should spider leave hawthorn to cahse a flag in sydney or stay with the mighty hawkers?
Poor old Spider. He left St Kilda and if they had a half decent ruckman, they might have one a flag by now. By leaving Hawthorn he might do the same to them.
So he should stick it out with the Hawks.
As much as Sydney are a current power in the league, this can change quite quickly over a year or two (see Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Essendon). He may find if Sydney doesn't win in 2007 with him, that may be his last chance.
Hawthorn are a young team with some potential superstars amongst their list. They could potentially be contenders within 3 years. And I'm sure they'd like to have a run at it before Crawford and Spider retire.

Does the hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) grow quickly?
Yes it is quite fast growing, approx 45cm p.a.
Does the hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) grow quickly?
Yes! As long as you prepare the ground well and prevent competition from weeds and other plants, especially when the hawthorns are young.
We planted 2 year old plants, whips, about 5 inches apart; well now 6 years later they would be at least 8 feet high if not kept cut back! And that was after cutting them down on planting, to make them bushy.
Brilliant trees, they are native, have attractive foliage, flowers are pretty and great for bees %26amp; other insects, berries pretty and good for the birds. 10 out of 10!!!
Reply:Yes it is also known as quick thorn.
Reply:Yes.
It slows down as it gets older, but to begin with it fairly romps away.
Reply:It grows approx 45cm per year.
Reply:The whips will take about 2 years to get establilshed without too much growth, then in year 3 they will romp away and grow 40-50cm a year. :-)

Can Hawthorn berry cause negative side affects for Arrhythmia?
Is it safe to take it to cure it?
Can Hawthorn berry cause negative side affects for Arrhythmia?
Be careful; Hawthorn has been known to help angina sufferers as it widens the arteries but it is abit iffy for arrhythmia. Ask your doctor first; if you need medication it is best to get something prescribed.

Does Hawthorn Berry Work at Lowering Blood Pressure?
I was wondering if anyone's had success with Hawthorn Berry supplements in lowering their blood pressure.
Does Hawthorn Berry Work at Lowering Blood Pressure?
Mike - Hawthorn supplements derived from the berries, flowers and leaves have been touted as having cardiovascular benefits since the 1800s, but the data to support these claims are limited to small trials and the results have been pretty lukewarm.
There was a recent British study which examined the blood pressure lowering effects of hawthorn extract in 79 diabetic patients. After 16 weeks, the blood pressure was minimally decreased. The systolic pressure (the top number) was the same in the group taking hawthorn and the group taking placebo. The diastolic pressure (the bottom number) was was 2mmHg lower in the group taking hawthorn. Similar results were seen in another small British study looking at 36 patients with high blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure was not affected, but the diastolic pressure decreased slightly.
More importantly, hawthorn extract while generally safe has some important side effects that you need to be aware of. Some people can have allergies to hawthorn. Large doses in animals have been shown to cause sedation and heart rhythm disturbances. Hawthorn can also have important interactions with other drugs or herbals. If you take Viagra or blood pressure medications, hawthorn may cause a big drop in blood pressure. It can enhance the effects of digoxin leading to heart rhythm disturbances. If you take ANY blood pressure or heart medicines, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking hawthorn!
Considering how much herbal supplements cost (they are almost never covered by insurance) and how much more effective prescription medications are, it does not seem worthwhile to use Hawthorn to lower your blood pressure. The argument that herbal medications are safer is patently untrue - ANY medication has the potential for side effects (in fact, many of our prescription drugs are derived from herbal sources) and to take something without medical supervision is potentially dangerous.
Good luck to you! Hope that helps!

Buddy Franklin is the best.

Reply:They haven't played as good as they could with the best forward and a lot of top mid fielders why did they loose that one down in tassie? I know Brisbane nearly beat them I generally don"t watch them hate the colour of there jumper so they still have a bit to prove but Buddy's a legend no doubt
Reply:This very question, what do think about Buddy was asked on SEN AM radio after Buddy had his 9 Goal Haul, in my opinion Buddy is a legend but compare him to the Even Greater (I make it capitals because he is so good) Peter Hudson, who over his whole career averaged 5.59 goals.

Reply:I'm very happy with what i've seen from them this year, but it's still only half way through the season. I'm looking forward to seeing how they go this week in Adelaide which will be a real test for them.
Also looking forward to see them in the finals, last years experience will help them greatly. Awesome to see Buddy take the step up this season too.
Reply:I think they are very good team and prob the best this season. But honestly, put any forward in the afl in a team with a great midfield and they'd kick 60 goals easy. If buddy played with a crap midfield we wouldn't be talking about him.
Reply:I think Hawthorn have been going OK at this present time......but they didn't react too good when they were put under close checking pressure in that game in Tas that they lost.
All finals games will be played in that manner. I am not going to go out on a limb %26amp; make wild predictions half way therough the season. They may suffer a bout of injuries....or loss of form....anything can happen.
Reply:honestly there a good team, but they ha vent played Geelong yet, and that will be the biggest challenge for the hawks this year. Geelong are the best team in the comp by a fair margin, and they have the best defense in the league and would be able to stop buddy Franklin any day of the week, last year when they vs geelong, buddy as kept to a goal, and half a dozen possesions by matty scarlett.
P.S go the cats
Reply:They are doing brilliant this season, i wasnt expecting them to do so well. They are a young team and yet play a good team game and the results speak for themselves. Buddy is good but if he kicked a few more straight he'd be better still
Reply:I think they are a chance to win the flag this year and will be a powerful team over the next few years.
Reply:what people don't realise, is that 1 hard knock to his shoulder and buddy is gone, and therefore their forward line, yer they may still have roughead, but buddy is the main bloke down there. and it would be interesting to see how they go withought him. concidering doggies beat them, and they don't have a major goal kicking forward, like buddy, roughead, jonathan brown or a daniel bradshaw.
Reply:Hawthorn are travelling pretty well so far this season, but I think they've got a bit of a way to go.
I honestly don't think they're ready to win a grand final at the moment, and I think if they played in the finals and had a bit of experience, they'd be better off for it in a few years to come and then if they played in a grand final it would make it that much sweeter.
Sorry - that's probably not what you wanted to hear but you have asked the question and I've given you an honest answer.
I certainly do think that Hawthorn have the potential to go all the way and if they keep it up they should win a grand final but I think it might be next year.
Reply:hawthorn is the best team by far
